- April 2001: While on probation, Downey was found wandering in an alley behind a hotel in Culver City, California and was arrested for being under the influence of drugs. This violation of his probation led to a four-month jail sentence.
- November 2001: Downey was arrested yet again for being under the influence of drugs and was sent to a treatment facility.
He has previously spoken openly about his struggles with drug addiction. Downey struggled with drug addiction in the 1990s and early 2000s, including cocaine, heroin, and marijuana. He had several run-ins with the law, including arrests for drug possession and driving while intoxicated.
